Dental Fads to Avoid

Fads come and go, and many times it happens for good reason. For example, when it comes to healthcare, fads that fade away are often ones that prove to be unfounded—or even ultimately dangerous. With so many people out there looking to save a buck or two with some home remedies, dental care is no stranger to its own range of fads. Here are some dental fads we recommend avoiding to protect your oral health:

1. Charcoal

Activated charcoal has become a beloved beauty trend, and while we can’t testify to its other uses, we can say that it’s not so great for your dental routine. Charcoal is an abrasive substance and using it on your teeth can seriously wear down your enamel. Your enamel never grows back, so you definitely don’t want to do anything to damage it! Some people think it can end up whitening your teeth, but instead, all that destruction to your enamel may end up just exposing more of the yellow dentin in your teeth. That’s surely not the look you’re going for!

2. Lemon Juice & Baking Soda

We love finding new, creative ways to use both lemon juice and baking soda since both prove to be quite handy when cleaning around the house. What they shouldn’t be used for is cleaning or whitening your teeth. Lemon juice, like other citric juices, is full of acid, which can ruin your teeth’s enamel. Then, baking soda is abrasive, which is also not good for the surface of your teeth.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide

Just because hydrogen peroxide is used in teeth-whitening products doesn’t make it safe for you to use it directly on your teeth on your own. Used in its pure form as a mouth rinse, it can actually harm your gums due to its harshness. You also don’t want to risk ingesting it.
