From Gingivitis to Periodontitis
Gum disease starts with gingivitis, a milder form of the disease. Why does it happen? You’ve got plaque to thank for that. When you consume starchy and sugary foods, they create plaque. That plaque is filled with nasty bacteria, and as it builds up, it gets under the gums, resulting in inflammation and irritation. If left unchecked, gingivitis will go on to become a more serious form of gum disease known as periodontitis.
Identifying Gum Disease
Gum disease comes with a variety of different signs and symptoms. Early symptoms include gums that bleed and feel swollen or irritated; discolored gums; bad breath; and receding gums. If it progresses, severe gum disease is linked to tooth loss, heart disease, diabetes, and more.
Preventing Gum Disease

In addition to brushing and flossing daily, be sure to eat a healthy diet and drink lots of water. Regular visits to the dentist are also key.
